This week I spent shadowing doctors performing orthopedic surgeries. On Monday I was able to see two arthroscopic shoulder surgeries, all while standing in the OR. Tuesday, I was able to see a 4 hour hip replacement surgery and Thursday I got to see a knee arthroscopic surgery and a knee replacement. I learned a lot about Portuguese Health Care this week from talking with the surgeons, and how it differs from what we do in the Untied States. It was very interesting to see different structures of the body in a surgery, and using previous knowledge from classes being able to determine what they were and their function. Seeing the procedures themselves gave me a lot of insight to how surgery works, and helped me see that I don't think I want to be an Orthopedic Surgeon. But that is the goal of this trip, to narrow down the options of what I want to do. Here are a couple pictures from the week, Abby and I in our scrubs about to go into a surgery
and a giant bear we saw in Cascais.
